workshop
Planning
For my workshop Me Lissie and Cameron are going to gillets school to teach a bunch of young student different musical techniques in Gillets school. We have decided that we will all have different roles within the work shop. This means we will be splitting the classes up in three sections and we will teach them different things and wthin each segement we are leading the workshop within that musical technique. In my workshop i will be teaching my class a stomp composition. So from there i will teach them all different rhythms and differrent precussive techniques.

Hi,
My friend Alex is no longer doing the workshop with me with now
it's Cameron Ferguson and my friend Liam.
We were wondering if you could come
up on Thursday 6th of March and do various workshops with keyboards, vocal and
percussion with various classes.
Let me know what you think.
Many thanks,
MISS R
Hi
Lyssie,
Well we have two year 7 classes first thing in the morning if that helps on that day?
How many classes do you want to do? I also have a year 8 and 9, year 9 could be
difficult though.
Let me know what you think
Miss R

Hi Celia,
Would it be possible to take the two year 7 classes and the year 8 class.
This means each of us can have and hour each leading.
Many thanks,
Alyssia :)

Hi Celia,
We've had a bit of trouble with being able to get up to Gillotts this
morning so we were wonering if we could come up this afternoon and take a couple
of classes for a workshop? Would 1:15pm be alright for this afternoon?
If not, it's perfectly fine but if that is the case could be possibly do
next Thursday too? We would like to try and get as much material as we can for
our workshop videos :)
Many Thanks,
Alyssia, Cameron and Liam :)
MISS R
Hi
Alyssia,
Sorry
it isn’t possible for this afternoon - I will get back to you as as soon as I
can about next Thursday
Thanks
Celia

Hi Celia,
That's alright, we're pretty flexible so it's alright :)
Thank you very much! We'll stay in touch.
MISS R
Hi Alyssia,
Can you still make this Thursday? Miss Filippou has two year 7 classes p 1 and 2 you
could all take them if you would like. The classes I have are lower ability and
so a bit more challenging.I have copied in Miss Filippou – if you wouldn’t mind copying her in on the reply
so that she also knows what is happening on Thursday. She doesn’t work at
GIllotts again until Thursday
Thanks

Hi,Are these lessons going to be in the morning? Because it would be good if
we could get back to college for the afternoon periods.
Also the ability doesn't really matter because we are doing a workshop
style kind of thing so all abilities are great! :)
MISS R
HI Alyssia,
Yes
they are Period 1 and 2 in the morning
Thanks

Preccussion
In my work shop i will be teaching my class different rhythmic techniques so that they can create their own stomp composition.
The first thing i would do to teach the young students who dont even know what stomp is, is to show them a video of a stomp performance. This way the class would get a feel of what they are about to learn. I choose stomp because for me its a lot more fun then just learning different rhythmic techniques. Stomp provides entertainment for the class and may be more interactive with there learning. Its also a lot more fun for the students, doing something you wouldnt normally learn at school. I had recently learnt stomp by another teacher at my school and i found that the lessons learning it were a lot more fun then the other classes and i was always excited to learn more.
The next thing i would do is warm them up by doing different rhythmic techniques such as making them play differnt simple rhythms such ass rhythms within a 4/4 time siganture. The class willl get a feel of what to do. I will be banging the table in 4/4 with a crotchet at every beat and i will get the whole class to copy me. The kids will not be using normal drumming equipement but using different random objects wihtin the class rooms like chairs and tables. This will take most of the drummers out of their comfort zones and so will help them develop their preccussive techniques. I think using stomp will be beneficial because not all schools have 15 drum kits, using stomp will enable me to use what ever objects i have around me.
After the class get settled in i will teach them how to play more complecated rhythmic techniques such as 7/4. in doing so they class will get better at their rhythmic skill and will develop a lot better. From there i will be teaching them how to put the two rhythms together slowly arranging a stomp composistion. The idea is to get the drummers playing different rhythms at the same time to creat a complicated drum beat like you would see in stomp. If the students are un able to do 7/4 i will stick to the 4/4 beat and try and work around with different beats within a 4/4 time signature.
I will split the class into two half way through class and so getting them in a smaller group. I will make everyone do a 4/4 beat together and one by one i will be making each indevidual person do some improvisation. Once everyone is done i will get them to start playing around with different preccussive instruments that lay around them such as chairs and pens.
The groups will have 10 minutes to come up with this and at the end of the session they will show eachother what they have made and will play it infront of the class and I. Throughout these 10 minutes i will help the groups come up with their own stomp composition. i will help them with improvisation, i will help them stay in time, i will also give them some pointers in to what to do next if they get stuck.

Scenarios
If a student feels ill or is sick: I will evacuate them straight to the medical centre within the school, and come straight back to the class.
If the students talk a lot with other students: I will move the students away from eachother and separate them to the other side of the room and therefor will be unable to make conversation while i talk.
If a certain students is cocky: I will calmly tell them to calm down and do what the rest of the students and if he or she starts banging louder i will tell him or her to stop. If he continues i will send him or her staight to the teacher for him or her to deal with him or her.
If the students are not capable to perform tasks i set: I will set other tasks for them which a lot more easier, i will also repeat my self a lot to make sure that the students have got a good idea of what to do and that they undertand me.
If the students are confused: I will often ask if the students are okay and if they have any questions to ask, if they are confused i will help them and repeat myself till they undertand, i will do all in my power to make sure they are on task with the rest of the class.

The lesson
Lissie, Cameron and I went down to gillets and went down to the music block from where we will be teaching. At first It was lissie's turn to teach the kids, she taught the kids singing and had one massive singing lesson with the whole class. Next it was me, I decided to go for the stomp theme where i would be teaching the kids how to do stomp. To start I showed them a video of a stomp performance. After that i could see all the kids were really axcited to start learning. From there i started asking questions such as "who can tell me the elements in a stomp composition" i got a good response from the class. I then asked around if there were any drummers and a couple of students raised their hand, so i kept them in mind knowing they probably would be the ones who would know what simple rhythms are.
To start off i got the whole class to start banging the tables at 4/4, i showed them what to do and so they could copie me. There were 3 rows of students probably with 10 students per row, and so i made the rows do different rhythms to what the other rows were doing. At first i made the first row start in a simple 4/4 rhthm doing crotchets on every beat. I then made the second for do two quavers a hald beat before the 4 beat. i then made the back row do a more complicated rhythm in 4/4 influenced on one of the drummers rhthms he started playing. After around 30 seconds i made each row swap, so now the second row did the simple crotchet on every note in 4/4, the back row did the quaver notes and the front did the complicated drum riff in 4/4. I then tried teaching the students a 7/4 rhythm but i quickly found out that it was way to difficult for the students to understand and play.
After that excersise I knew all the students were now warmed up so i split the class into two and told them that each froup will be making a stomp composition and by the end of the class the two groups will com together and play infront o eachother. To start, i made one of the groups do some improvisatin to get them out their comfort zones, so i made everyone do a 4/4 beat with a crotchet on every beat and indevidually one by one i made them improvise infront of the group. After i made everyone do improvisation, i then pointed out two students imparticular who changed it up a little. All the studfents round the table just hit the table with their hands but two other students didnt, thei clapped and used their elbow on the table. I asked the group " what did these two not do which everyone else did do?" i did this to ge them thinking about their actions. After a while they realised the same thing that i did in that they didnt just hit the table with their hands.
After i got them really comfortable i got them using different preccussive things such as chairs and pens hitting metal. I did this to show that you dont all have to be doing the same thing, you can all be doing different thinks but in a syncopated rhythm to make it sound good. I asked around, who would like to use chairs a nf a few students raised their hands, i then asked who wants to use their hands, a few students also raised their hands, i then asked who wanted to be the off beat. No one knew what it was apart from one student who then showed the class, after that only two students were comfortable to do it. i got them to hit theur pens agains the arms of the chair which was metal and so axcted as an off beat high hat. Some other girl also then asked me if she could use her voise which i thought was a great idea, so i made her sing one note but with crotchets on every beat in 4/4. I then got another boy to do the exact same thing. The same girl also started hitting this wooden box she was sitting on which was really bassy, and sounded really cool so not only was she using voice, but she was the bass drum leading the whole ensemble together.
I then got the group plaing together in one massive 15 people ensemble and it sounded really good especially with the off beat high hat and the bass drum leading everyone. It came close to the end of the hour and so we ran out of time and so my group showed their little composition to the other half of the class which were doing the exact same thing. It was the end of the lesson and so the students then all ran off quickly after.
Evaluation
What went well:
When i first started the workshop i showed the whole class a video of a stomp performance, after that all the class seemed really excited, all the students were really enthusiastic and were up for learning about it. The class were not bored and so it was much more weasier to teach them. I think throughout the wholeworkshop all the students had worked really well and they didnt seem to be bored throughout the whole lesson which was good because i wasnt boring them.
All the kids were putting thier hands up in the air when i was asking a question, and all of them wanted to give everything a go. One boy imparticular was really excited about learning stomp because he was a drummer himself. The whole class through the session were energetic and were really good in the fact that they didnt talk very much, that meant to me that they were listening to what i was saying.
When i told them all to do a 4/4 beat with crotchets on every beat they all did it following me, none of the class didnt bother and non of them went of in their own beat and started banging away at the table. I also felt like i tought the class 4/4, because when ever i said play the 4/4 beat, they all did the same thing and so to me they remembered what i tought them and what i was saying wasnt just going out the other ear.
The class responded really well to the questions i was asking as well, for instence, when i asked my group 'what were these students not doing compared to the rest of the group' they all made good points and after a fewpoints they said the right answer showing ditermination in the class to learn.
I also felt that the class were not shy at all, i had no students in the class that were scared of improvising in front of everyone else, this was good because i knew they were all confident in showing me what they were capable of achieving.
What didnt go well:
Some of the students were really confident, but i found some of the boys were way to confident and often went and tried banging the table harder then anyone else, the boy next to him would then try and be louder and to forth. I quickly executed this by telling them to stop, and to hit a little more quiet, they did what i said and it was fine.
I found that the capability of some students were minimul, i asked them to do the 4/4 beat and some of them were un able to copy me even with the simplest beat. Eventually after time they found it a lot easier after i repeated the beat over and over again infront of them.
Even though most of the students were very well behaved, some students were uncapable of staying quiet and consistantly talked to the person next to them as soon as i put them together half way through the class. I quickly fixed this by moving the students. What i also could have done was ask the teacher before hand to whcih students should not be sat next to eachother. This was due to lack of planning.
I found that i lacked a lot of preccusive instruments such as sticks because the students had to use their hands to hit the table, some students also ended up using their pend which was very quiet and i couldnt hear them.
What I will do next time:
If i was to do this workshop again i would make sure my planning is more accurate. This includes coming up to the teacher before the lesson and asking who should not be sat next to eachoher, and who should be sat where. This would help me massivly beacsue this would prevent my students talking to eachother, or even causing an argument.
Next time i will prepare myself for senarios in which the student is uncapable of playing a really simple beat. This would help me because i could find tasks for those with that uncapability to do. This would prevent them from not understanding what to do and just sitting there in scilence.
I will plan a lot more tasks for the students to do in my workshop. Often i found that after a while the tasks i had set out for the students to do were running short and i had left them repeating the 4/4 beat for a while. Planning more tasks would prevent my students from doing this again and getting bored in my lesson.
Next time i come and teach stomp i will bring some preccusive objects in such as sticks for the studfents to use and bin lids ect. This would mean that the students would have to use their hands at all time, and so they wouldnt become sore i often i found with some students.
This is a review from the teacher that was watching my class:
